Montana’s Glacier Country: A Wild, Beautiful, Bucket-List Adventure 🏔️

If you’ve ever wanted to breathe crisp mountain air, hike beside turquoise lakes, and end the day under a sky full of stars—Glacier National Park should be at the top of your list. Tucked into the northwest corner of Montana, this region delivers jaw-dropping views, dramatic hikes, charming mountain towns, and a feeling of true escape.

We spent several days exploring the best of Glacier and its surrounding areas, and I can confidently say: Montana is magic. Here’s everything you need to know to plan a stunning mountain getaway.

Arrival + Flathead Lake

Fly into Missoula or Kalispell and head north through the scenic Flathead Valley. Flathead Lake is a must-stop on the way to Glacier. It’s the largest natural freshwater lake west of the Mississippi—and easily one of the clearest and most beautiful.

Make time to stop in Bigfork or Lakeside for lunch on the water. Restaurants like The Raven or Flathead Harbor Grill offer lakefront dining with unforgettable views. It’s the perfect start to your Montana adventure.

Stay: Under Canvas Glacier

For a lodging experience that blends comfort and nature, Under Canvas Glacier offers luxury safari-style tents just minutes from the park entrance. Fall asleep to the sound of the forest and wake up ready to explore—all without sacrificing comfort.

Glacier National Park: What to See + Do

Hiking Highlights:

  • Highline Trail – A challenging, iconic trek that hugs the mountainside with panoramic views of Glacier’s peaks. Not for the faint of heart or anyone afraid of heights, but easily one of the most rewarding hikes in the park.

  • Hidden Lake Overlook – An accessible, must-do hike from Logan Pass with some of the park’s most famous scenery.

  • Avalanche Lake via Trail of the Cedars – A moderate, peaceful hike that starts in lush cedar forest and ends at a serene lake surrounded by cliffs and waterfalls.

  • St. Mary & Virginia Falls – Two stunning waterfalls located off Going-to-the-Sun Road. Short, scenic, and well worth the walk.

  • Bowman Lake – A more remote, less crowded experience in the northwest corner of the park. It’s a perfect picnic spot for those seeking solitude.

Beyond the Trails: Local Activities

There’s more to this area than just hiking. Some top local experiences include:

  • Whitewater Rafting – Try a guided rafting tour on the Flathead River for adventure and views you can’t get from the road.

  • Treetop Walks + Alpine Slides at Whitefish Mountain – Fun for all ages with a view to match.

  • Shopping & Dining in Whitefish – Spend an afternoon strolling this charming town’s boutiques, galleries, and local eateries. Don’t leave without trying huckleberry ice cream!

Driving Tips & Logistics

  • Start early – Glacier’s parking lots, especially at Logan Pass, fill up fast. Aim to hit the road between 5:00–5:30am for the best chance at parking and sunrise views.

  • Going-to-the-Sun Road – The main road through the park is an attraction in itself. Carved into the mountainside, it offers dramatic scenery around every curve.

  • Reservations & Rentals – Car rentals book up early in peak season, and timed entry reservations are required for parts of Glacier National Park in the summer—plan ahead!
